The Big Move

by Sarah Smith

Sadie Wister’s world is about to change. Her father lost his job in the city forcing the family to move to a ramshackle farmhouse in the middle of nowhere.

Upon arrival, they quickly realize that their new life is going to be significantly more challenging than they had planned on.

Forced to reclaim the abandoned house and homestead, the Wisters work together as a family and with their new surrounding community to learn AND teach you, the reader, an abundance of new skills including growing and preserving food, raising animals and more!

The Big Move is both narrative and handbook for anyone that loves a good story and wishes to learn more about the arts of homemaking, growing and preserving food and living in close relationship with nature.

Sadie Wister’s story is one that uses the adventures (and misadventures) of the entire Wister family (Sadie’s Mom, Dad, and her two brothers) to inspire and teach children ages 6 and up about the innovation, perseverance and actual real-life skills required to build and maintain homestead.

From canning to composting, gardening, and animal husbandry to working together as a family and building community, The Big Move is not just an enjoyable story for the whole family, but also a handbook that teaches the reader by immersing them in the characters’ experiences of learning practical skills that promote strong households as well as community-collaboration.

The heroes of this book are regular folks like you and me that due to a change in life circumstances begin to experience the value of bringing their family experiences back home.

When all else has failed, the Wister Family begins to bring everything in their life back to basics and back home again in order to build a new life for themselves. They learn new ways to invest in their security, cultivate their ability to work together as a family to tackle life’s challenges all the while carving out a richer and more fulfilling life for themselves. And the best part is that they teach you, the reader, all their newly learned skills as they progress!

**Additional homeschooling/educational support materials (advanced vocabulary worksheets, detailed canning, and composting instructions, etc. ) are also available as downloadable PDF’s when you purchase the book.

“The old and honorable idea of 'vocation' is simply that we each are called, by God, or by our gifts, or by our preference, to a kind of good work for which we are particularly fitted.”

— Wendell Berry

“The children must enjoy the book. The ideas it holds must each make that sudden, delightful impact upon their minds, must cause that intellectual stir, which mark the inception of an idea.”

— Charlotte Mason
